Pat Robertson Calls for Assassination of Hugo Chavez
Televangelist Calls Venezuelan President a 'Terrific Danger' to the United States

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Aug. 22) - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."
Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

COMMENTARY

I don't think I need any commentary here - even though I do have to say that I don't much care for Chavez. Then again, I don't much care for Pat Robertson either.

Here are some other great quotes from Mr. Robertson. Such a respectful, understanding and God-faring/loving man.

"If they look over the course of 100 years, I think the gradual erosion of the consensus that's held our country together is probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings."-- On whether "activist judges" are more of a threat than terrorists, May 2005

"Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up." -- Referring to the State Department's location while criticizing the agency, October 2003

Dear KOB,

do you finally see now why more and more Christianity is becoming synonymous with evil in our minds?

Its horrible people like this claiming to be the voice of Christianity.

The problem is, where are all the truly good Christians, the REAL Christians? Why aren't they being more vocal and speaking out against people like this that claim to speak for all Christians?

Don't you see, no one in the Christian community is stopping this maddness, so the rest of us naturally come to the conclusion that all Christians must agree with this lunatic!

Naturally. Of course ALL Christians are evil. By the way, Cindy Sheehan is a former youth minister - evil lady.

How should they stop Pat, assassination? What happened to your free speech lecture?

You should really stick to an argument and quick contradicting yourself. Your killing AB's credibility.

He is not killing my credibility. Who said we should assasinate him? I think the point was that no one should call for anyone's assasination.

You clearly missed his point - he is not saying that they are all evil, he is saying that when no one stands up to bullsh*t like Pat's, it makes all of them look bad. I am sure you can understand that.

And stop putting words in people's mouth...that is clearly detracting from your credibility.

KOB,

did you even read my post? Maybe you should re-read it before you think I'm contradicting myself, so you don't make yourself look foolish in your responses.

I never said all Christians are evil. Please, read my post.

I never said that people aren't entitled to free speach. Where did I say that? Just more Republican word slander and double talk I guess.

What I said is there are evil lunatics like Pat Roberts but no good religious voices saying..."hey now, he doesn't speak for all of us!"

And, some article from a dallas newspaper is hardly solid proof of anything.

Its like citing the Wikkepedia as fact.

Free speech does not cover inciting violence and/or a crime, by the way.

I just can not even fathom how you can defend his comments. The only reason I can come up with (and I hope it is true) is that you are arguing for argument's sake.
